In the context of my research, I have emphasized mentoring and training the next generations of researchers, with a particular emphasis on recruitment of, and support for, those from historically marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds. To date, I have mentored and supervised/co-supervised over 70 Ph.D. students and post-docs (roughly half in each category), many of whom have advanced to careers in basic research and/or education. Whether a student or post-doc ultimately goes on to a career in science or some other field is less important to me than their experience on my team, formation of an independent, scientific mindset, and development of confidence in their own agency.
